Heresies 3
Overview
Arianism: When Philosophy Eclipses Scripture
Arianism arose in the early church when a presbyter named Arius allowed a popular philosophy—Neoplatonism, also called dualism—to govern his reading of Scripture. Dualism teaches that matter is evil and spirit is good. Reasoning from that premise rather than from God's Word, Arius concluded that the eternal, spiritual God could not truly enter material creation. The result was the famous Arian slogan: "There was a time when the Son was not." Arius denied the Trinity, denied the full divinity of Christ, and made Jesus an inferior, created being. The Lutheran Confessions answer this directly in the Formula of Concord: the "new Arians" wrongly teach that Christ "is not true essential natural God of one eternal divine essence with God the Father."
Scripture dismantles the philosophical foundation of Arianism at every turn. The creation account repeatedly declares matter "good" Genesis 1:4, refuting the claim that material things are inherently evil. God is not aloof from His creation; He walks with Adam and Eve in the garden Genesis 3:8. The eternal Word was with God and was God from the beginning John 1:1, and "in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily" Colossians 2:9. After the resurrection, Jesus did not discard His humanity; He showed His disciples His flesh and bones (Luke 24:37-39; John 20:20). When the Son took on human nature at the incarnation, He took it on forever. Paul's warning fits Arianism precisely: "See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit" Colossians 2:8. The cross will always look foolish to those who trust human wisdom 1 Corinthians 1:18-25.
Watch the pattern: every heresy either denies Scripture outright or appeals to a higher authority—a philosophy, a new revelation, a magisterium—that supersedes Scripture. Whenever a "new teaching" claims to correct what the church has confessed for two thousand years, be careful. Scripture is the norm; preaching, catechism, and tradition must come out of Scripture, never the reverse.
Arianism is not merely a museum piece. It walks up your sidewalk in the form of the Jehovah's Witnesses. They reject the Trinity, deny the two natures of Christ, teach that Jesus is a created being (a lesser "god"), describe the Holy Spirit as an impersonal force, and insist that salvation must be earned through works. They typically argue from Colossians 1:15, claiming "firstborn of all creation" means Jesus was created. But the Greek word is prōtotokos (preeminent), not prōtoktistos (first created). Scripture itself uses "firstborn" to mean preeminence (Psalm 89:27; Jeremiah 31:9). Hold up the oneness of God Deuteronomy 6:4 alongside His triune name Matthew 28:19, and answer works-righteousness with the gospel of grace Ephesians 2:8-9.
When a Jehovah's Witness comes to your door, do not be afraid. Welcome them, be hospitable, and witness simply to the Christ you know—true God and true man, one essence in three persons, the Savior who saves by grace alone. You are not responsible for the outcome; you are responsible to speak the truth in love. Unleash the Word, and let the Holy Spirit do His work.

Gracious Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for this opportunity to be in your word. 0s
We thank you for the truth of Holy Scripture and the wonderful privilege that 5s
belongs to us to plummet's depths and riches. We ask, O Lord, that as we study the 10s
very heresies of the church, that we understand how they are fundamental departures 16s
from the Word, and we pray that as we hear echoes of these very words today, 22s
that we might be equipped to proclaim the scriptural truth. Bless now our study to 27s
your glory in Jesus' name, amen. Well, we continue on in our study. Last week we 35s
took a look at a group called the Manakeans. This was a third century 42s
a heresy, a third century AD. It was born from a person by the name of Manny who 47s
brought together a whole host of different heresies that were really pulling 55s
Christians away from the truth. You'll recall that at the heart of the heresy 61s
that Manny had interjected was that evil is not a foreign intrusion into 68s
creation. That was at the heart of it, but that evil had always existed and so 74s
participants then are just in this continual cosmic struggle against good 82s
and evil. To put it simply, it was Flip Wilson, the devil made me do it. That's 89s
Manakeanism right there where you don't take responsibility for your own sin, 96s
but you blame someone else for that sinfulness. Well today I want to discuss 101s
with you a group called the Arians, the Arians. And we're going to see how the 109s
Arians translate to a specific group today. So as we're studying along, see if 116s
you can guess what group the Arians are manifested in today. To understand 123s
Arianism, you have to first start with what is called Neoplatanism. Neoplatanism. 131s
Neoplatanism is the belief that matter is evil and that which is spirit is good. 141s
Another way to describe Neoplatanism is what is called dualism. 149s
Matter is evil and that which is spirit is good. So Arius comes along and he is 155s
motivated by this whole understanding of dualism and he reasons that because 166s
God is spirit, therefore God must be good and God who is spirit cannot 174s
enter into a human form because matter is evil. So he says the eternal God, 182s
since the eternal God is incapable of entering into human history, that's Neoplatanism. 194s
Jesus Christ is born of a woman therefore because the spirit can't go with the 201s
physical because the spirit is good and the physical is bad, that's dualism. 213s
Neoplatanism, same thing as dualism, he says Jesus then must be an inferior God. 218s
So Arius maintained and you can sum up Arius's belief this way, Arius maintained 225s
that there was a time when the sun was not. There was a time he said when the sun 232s
was not because if you start with a philosophy of Neoplatanism and dualism that's 239s
where you wind up because if matter is evil, if the spirit is good, how can 247s
God who is spirit enter into that which is evil? So at the heart of the 255s
heresy then was letting human philosophy lead away from the truth, letting human 262s
philosophy lead away from the truth. Arius denied the Trinity, Trinity one God in 271s
three persons, Arius said nope that can't be so he denied the Trinity. He also denied 284s
the divinity of Jesus, he denied the divinity of Jesus, why? Because you're right back at 292s
dualism, the whole Neoplatanism type of thought so he denies the Trinity, he denies the divinity 300s
of Christ. He lets his reason and he lets a philosophy govern that which is truth. In 309s
our Lutheran doctrinal writings in the solid declaration of the formula of conqueror that 319s
says this, the new Arians teach that Christ is not true essential natural God of one eternal 323s
divine essence with God the Father. They say he is only adorned with divine majesty inferior 333s
to and beside God the Father. So record in our very doctrinal writings here is a denial 341s
here of this false teaching. Where does the root here of this heresy? Where does it manifest 350s
itself today? We're going to see a specific manifestation here in a few minutes. But the 359s
manifestation of this comes when human reasoning and more specifically philosophy then 364s
becomes the guiding principle of determining that which is truth. That which is truth. 371s
Well, let's have some fun and dismantle Aryanism. So let's go to Genesis chapter 1, verse 383s
- Genesis chapter 1, verse 4. We're going to see how scripture in the very beginning 393s
defies dualism. It defies dualism. That matter is evil and that which is of the spirit is 407s
is good. Genesis chapter 1, verse 4. And God saw that the light was good and God separated 415s
the light from the darkness. Let's go down into verse 10 of chapter 1. God called the 427s
dry land earth and the waters they were gathered together. He called seas and God saw that it 435s
was good. Verse 12, the earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed of every kind 441s
and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it and God saw that it was good. 451s
Good. Verse 17, God sent them and set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, 458s
to rule over the day and over the night and to separate the light from the darkness. And God 466s
saw that it was good. Verse 21. So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature 473s
that moves of every kind with which the waters swarm and every winged bird of every kind 481s
and God saw that it was good. We catch the theme pretty early, don't we? Here you have 488s
creation referenced in the creation account in Genesis the first chapter and you see with 496s
all of the references to creation and it specifically the scripture telling us that it was 503s
good that pulls the rug out from the very start, from neoplatonism, from dualism that says 510s
that creation is evil. So the only way that you can hold to neoplatonism, hold to dualism 517s
is if you fundamentally deny the scriptures. It's the only way that you can hold to it. 527s
Notice as we go through these heresies, you have a common theme of either the denial 536s
of scripture and an appeal to something else. Here it is, the appeal of a philosophy, the denial 542s
of scripture or a source of revelation that then you say trumps, hold the scripture. So 550s
the source here that trumps holy scripture and that source of doctrine, that source of 565s
belief supersedes the holy scripture. Holy scripture is that which is the basis of all 575s
we believe, right? As I tell my confirmation kids, I said if I preach something that's 584s
wrong, who has to change, near the scripture and they're delighted to say me. Delighted, right? 592s
I said if there was ever found something wrong in the small catechism and I said and there 604s
won't, but if there is something found wrong in the small catechism, what changes? Catechism 611s
or scripture. I said okay, which way is it? I said is it the scripture comes out of 618s
the catechism or is it the catechism comes out of scripture? See they can identify here 628s
that the Bible is the basis so it has to be this way here where the catechism comes out, 636s
the preaching comes out, the teaching comes out of scripture. And there's no appeal to 643s
an authority where one says I have it on a different revelation that therefore this scripture 648s
must be interpreted in this way or this scripture is wrong. So just kind of listen for that 657s
in all of the heresies we're going to talk about. It's either a flat out denial of holy 664s
scripture or there's an appeal to a source that supersedes then scripture or gives you the 668s
correct lenses through which you are supposed to interpret the pope. Yeah, that's a very good 674s
question John. The question is of the infallibility of the pope. It is very easily, very easy historically 684s
to show where when you have changes of position in the pope, how can you have an infallible 694s
pope when you have the change and it's very dangerous is it not? When you have someone 700s
who then supersedes the scripture and you have an infallible source in the pope but yet 707s
a denial of the infallibility of the scriptures. And then you have this recipe for the 715s
fundamental departure in so many areas of Catholicism. Good point. So dualism then caused areas to 724s
assume that God must remain distant from His creation. Why would God have to remain distant 735s
from His creation because matter is why? Matter is evil, right? Well, we see that God certainly 743s
doesn't remain distant from His creation. Let's go to Genesis chapter 3, verse 8. Genesis 753s
chapter 3, verse 8. They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the 760s
time of the evening breeze and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of 773s
the Lord God among the trees of the garden. That is not a distant God. Walking amongst 777s
the garden, knowing what creates the distance between us and God is God's, it's not the 785s
reluctance of God to enter into creation. We see God's indeed desire and manifestation 792s
of His entering into creation. What created a distance was sin, right? Sin is that which 799s
separates us from a holy God. Let's go to John the first chapter. And here we see in 805s
John chapter 1, the exact opposite of what Areas maintained that there was a time when 814s
the sun was not. John chapter 1, Matthew, Mark, Luke and then John. In the beginning 823s
was the word in Greek, that's logos. Notice how it's capitalized because it is communicating 835s
its Jesus. In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. 843s
Areas said there was a time when Jesus was not. In other words, that Jesus was a created 852s
being. Let's go to Colossians chapter 1. So keep turning toward Revelation. Across 859s
over 1st and 2nd Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and then Colossians. Colossians 866s
chapter 1 verse 17. Colossians 1 verse 17. And there we read the word in the beginning 874s
and he himself is before all things and in him all things hold together. It's a speaking 889s
of Jesus. He's the head of the body, the church, he's the beginning, the first born from 896s
the dead so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness 901s
of God was pleased too. Well, or in Colossians the 2nd chapter verse 9. Colossians 909s
chapter 2 verse 9. Here it's echoed again. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells 919s
bodily. Areas said that Jesus then was an inferior God, an inferior God. He was a lesser 929s
God that there was a time when Jesus was not. Dualism also would suggest that after 937s
Jesus rose from the dead he no longer desired to have his human body. Why? She got the 947s
whole evil and the good thing, right? Of dualism. It's the exact opposite of what we see 954s
in scripture. Let's go to John the 20th chapter, Matthew, Mark, Luke and then John. John 959s
the 20. After he said this he showed them his hands and his side then the disciples rejoiced 976s
when they saw the Lord. Or jumping over into Luke chapter 24, Matthew, Mark and then 990s
Luke, Luke chapter 24 verse 37. And then John the 20th chapter, Matthew, Matthew, 998s
Luke 24, 37. They were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 1006s
He said to them, why are you frightened? Then why do doubts arise in your hearts? Look 1023s
at my hands and my feet. See that it is I myself. Touch me and see for a ghost does not 1027s
have flesh and bones as you see that I have. When the humanity was joined to the divinity 1034s
of Christ at the incarnation there at Bethlehem, when it was joined it was forever joined. 1041s
It was forever joined. So, Aria said that after the resurrection Jesus wouldn't want to 1047s
have the human body that is absolutely contrary to what we see in scripture. So dualism 1054s
then, neoplatonism upon which Arianism was based is a purely human idea. It doesn't 1062s
have any scriptural support for it at all. Notice what Paul says about such thinking. 1071s
Let's go to Colossians chapter 2 verse 8. Verse and second Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, 1080s
Philippians and Colossians. Colossians chapter 2 verse 8. 1087s
See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit according to 1101s
human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe and not according to 1109s
Christ. The elemental spirits of the universe is just a phrase to say base simplistic human 1115s
ideas. So see to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy because if philosophy 1123s
then this belief system that is conjured up becomes that which then trumps the truth of 1131s
holy scripture then you've got scripture being absolutely consumed by this false teaching 1139s
of philosophy which is exactly what Aria's came up with. Notice what Paul says about the 1148s
wisdom of human ideas. Let's go to 1 Corinthians chapter 1. 1 Corinthians chapter 1156s
- Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts and Romans. Then 1 Corinthians chapter 1 verse 18. 1162s
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to us who are 1183s
being saved it's the power of God. For it is written I will destroy the wisdom of the 1189s
wise and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. Where is the one who's wise? 1197s
Where's the scribe? Where's the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom 1204s
of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world did not know God through wisdom, 1211s
God decided through the foolishness of our proclamation to save those who believe. 1217s
For Jews demand signs and Greek demands wisdom but we proclaim Christ crucified a 1225s
stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. But to those who are the call both Jews and 1231s
Greeks Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1239s
For God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom and God's weakness is stronger than human. 1244s
People are not saved on the basis of their philosophical ideas. They are saved by the word of the cross. 1253s
And so here's a phrase to listen for and to be very careful when you hear it. 1264s
There's this new philosophy, there's this new teaching. 1270s
Listen for that and be very careful about it. 1275s
You see that in the life of the church as 1282s
professors throughout the years in order to get something published it 1288s
couldn't be the boring old stuff that the church has held to for 2000 years. 1294s
It's got to be something new. And so you'll see it a partier from the fundamental truth in trying to 1300s
substantiate that why? Because it's how you get the book published. 1307s
Instead of saying here is a book of truth. Let me give you a book by the way. 1312s
If you want seminary in a box it is Christian doctrine by Kohler, 1317s
K-O-E-H-L-E-R. 1323s
It's not a book that you want to pick up for casual light reading on vacation. 1327s
But it's also not so technical here that you can't say this is just too much. 1336s
It's like it's reading a medical type of thing. 1343s
No, it's really well written. It's a lot of depth. 1345s
And it is seminary in a box. 1351s
It talks about orthodox Lutheranism and it is presented in such an incredible and wonderful, 1354s
wonderful way. And I'm so pleased that it's not a new book by any means. 1362s
I'm so pleased that they keep publishing this and publishing it. 1367s
Because that's just communicating the historic positions of the Orthodox Church for 2000, for 2000 years. 1371s
So the danger then for areas, the danger of airiness and what birthed it was philosophy, 1380s
where philosophy, a new teaching then, trumped everything. 1387s
And you had the denial of the word of God. 1393s
So here's the question. 1397s
Who are the modern day areas? 1401s
They've probably knocked on your door. 1405s
The Jehovah Witnesses. 1409s
They're all straight line from Aryan thought to the Jehovah's Witnesses. 1410s
In terms of what it is, they believe. 1417s
Let me break it down so that when a Jehovah's Witness comes to the door, invite them in. 1421s
Invite them in. 1429s
Don't accept their premise, obviously, because they're going to lie to you here and I'll show you one of the chief lie that you're going to get, 1431s
as they're telling you. 1441s
But just witness to the truth that you know. 1444s
Do you know enough to witness to a Jehovah's Witness? 1447s
Absolutely. 1449s
It's the same principle of, do you know enough to witness the gospel of Jesus Christ? 1450s
Absolutely. 1455s
You don't have to go through a 20 week session on Jehovah's Witnesses before you open the door. 1456s
Now you already know it. 1462s
Just witness to the truth. 1463s
You'll hear the falsehood of what they're saying. 1465s
One time it just so grieved my heart, this young Jehovah's Witness was a son of a Lutheran pastor. 1470s
You know, and you just, you just ache here. 1477s
You know, and here he's going door to door and we're going to see that that is part of the whole works righteousness, 1481s
that they do that in order to be saved. 1489s
The average Jehovah's Witness does that about 10 hours a week. 1493s
And then you've got more advanced ones that will do it about 30 hours a week. 1499s
And it's all a method for them to earn their salvation. 1503s
So when they come on in, invite them in, be cordial to them, love them, and just share the truth of the gospel with them. 1509s
In other words, unleash the truth and let God do what God is going to do. 1518s
So let me just kind of break down a couple of things of what you see in the modern day, Arianism, 1525s
which is the Jehovah's Witness. 1530s
They reject the Trinity. 1534s
They reject the Trinity. 1541s
So when you're listening to Jehovah's Witness at the heart of what they're talking about, 1544s
is rejection of the Trinity. 1548s
They will say that Jesus is not God, hear the echoes of various. 1551s
There was a time when Jesus was not, that Jehovah created him, hear areas, right? 1555s
That Jesus was a created being. 1564s
They will say that the Holy Spirit is not God, but it is an impersonal force. 1566s
They will say that Jesus is a God, G-O-D, but not the eternal God. 1573s
They will say he's not the second member of the Trinity. 1581s
They absolutely deny the Trinity. 1584s
So you start off, and the fundamental basis of all this is the heresy of the denial of the Trinity. 1587s
So just witness to what it is that you know. 1594s
One God and three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 1598s
Three separate persons, one essence, one essence. 1603s
They reject the two natures of Christ. 1609s
Two natures of Christ. 1616s
Remember Scripture says that Jesus Christ is true God and true man. 1618s
They'll reject the two natures of Christ. 1624s
So a good passage, a couple of passage to the sake of time here, I'm going to abbreviate a little bit, 1628s
but a good passage to talk about in terms of the oneness of God is Deuteronomy 6.4. 1634s
To talk about the triune nature of God is Matthew chapter 28.19. 1642s
That's the part of the Great Commission. 1648s
Go therefore and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 1650s
But if you turn to Colossians chapter 2, verse 8, Colossians chapter 2. 1656s
Verse 2 Corinthians, Galatians Ephesians, Philippians and then Colossians. 1664s
Colossians chapter 2 verses 8 and 9. 1671s
Verse 9 again, in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily. 1683s
So when they deny them, the two natures of Christ, when they deny the divinity of Christ, 1693s
you have to appeal them to another source outside of Scripture, right? 1700s
So they will appeal to another source. They'll appeal to the watch tower. 1706s
They'll appeal to a studies in Scripture going back to 1886. 1710s
They'll appeal to that which is contrary to Scripture or they will deny the original language of the Scripture. 1716s
It's the only way you get to the philosophy that then can support what it is that they are saying. 1726s
So if they say, well that's a false translation of the Greek, the response is, no it's not. 1733s
No it's not. 1741s
And you look at all of the translations of the English and the wording might be a little bit different in some of these sentences, 1744s
but there is never a denial of the fullness of the deity of Christ in any of the translations. 1753s
And remember translations are just attempts to take the ancient language of old and translate it into language that is understandable today. 1759s
Are there better translations than others? Sure. Are there some of those translations that are closer to the Greek? Yes. 1768s
But there's no English translation that denies from the Greek. There's no English translation from the Greek that denies the deity of Christ. 1776s
There's not. 1788s
And so you just appeal then and not accept the premise of the argument. 1789s
They will say that Jesus was the highest created being. 1796s
Remember you've denied the Trinity, they've denied the two natures of Christ, so then you say Jesus is the highest of the created being. 1806s
I guarantee that if you enter into a discussion with a Jehovah's Witness, you will wind up in Colossians 115 quite quickly. 1814s
And here is something you might want to jot in the margin of your Bible. 1825s
But they will turn and they will say, well, look at Colossians chapter 1 verse 15. 1832s
It says, he is the image of the invisible God, the first born of all creation. 1838s
The first born of all creation. Well, then you hear that and you go, oh, what is that mean? 1846s
Because it's sure sounds like what they're saying here is that Jesus was a created being. 1855s
It sure sounds like that of first born. 1862s
Okay, here's two words that you might want to just jot in your Bible. 1867s
There are two Greek words. 1872s
In the ancient Greek here, remember the testament was in Greek. 1878s
You've got pro-tote-okos. 1886s
Then there's another word. 1894s
There's pro-toc-pistos. 1897s
What is in the ancient Greek here in the New Testament and it is not under dispute. 1908s
This is not a time where you'll have Greek scholars saying, is there a conjunction that should be there or not? 1914s
It's none of that. 1925s
This word here, which is translated first born, is a correct translation. 1927s
But the meaning of it is preeminent. 1934s
The meaning of it is preeminent. 1937s
How do we know that? 1939s
For the sake of time, I got to jump a little bit. 1940s
But if you put Psalm 8927, Psalm 8927 and Jeremiah 31, 9, in the margins there, that shows you that in Scripture, that whole concept is one of preeminent. 1945s
If you get into these texts, Menassa was born before Ephraim. 1964s
And you'll see there that if you don't understand what it means is preeminent. 1972s
It can't mean here first born in how we understand that our first son was Matthew, our second son was Jordan, and our third son was Daniel. 1976s
The word means preeminent. 1990s
This word here, Protoctistos means first created. 1993s
So Jehovah's Witness will say, well the word there in Greek is Protoctistos. 2001s
To which you say, no it's not. 2010s
It's Protoctos there. 2015s
You go back. 2018s
And that's what is recorded. 2020s
This is the Jehovah's Witness revision of the Greek. 2024s
And it has to be revised to get to their false belief. 2032s
You're going to run into that right away. 2039s
Right away with it. 2041s
They reject the Trinity then, they reject the two natures. 2046s
They'll say that Jesus was the highest created being. 2049s
They'll maintain that human beings have to save themselves to come to salvation. 2053s
Human beings have to save themselves. 2059s
And you do that by works. 2065s
So that you have faith in Jesus and you prove yourself worthy of God's kindness. 2067s
To which we simply say there's no amount of works that we could ever earn our way in the glory of heaven. 2075s
And a perfect place to go is just talk about the holiness of God. 2082s
How could any work on our part ever make us holy before the Holy One? 2086s
