Overview

More Grace to Bestow

In Mark 5:24-34, a woman who had suffered with hemorrhages for twelve years pressed through the crowd to touch the cloak of Jesus. Her condition was not merely physical. According to Leviticus 15, her bleeding rendered her ceremonially unclean—cut off from family, friends, the temple, and the synagogue. She had endured much under many physicians, spent everything she had, and only grew worse. Then she heard about Jesus. Risking everything by entering a crowd she had no right to be in, she reached out in faith: "If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well." Immediately, she was healed.

What follows is the heart of the matter. Jesus, who according to John 2:25 knows what is in everyone, was not asking "Who touched me?" out of ignorance. He calls her out because He has more grace to bestow. Throughout Scripture, when God calls a person by name—Samuel in 1 Samuel 3, Moses at the burning bush in Exodus 3, Saul on the Damascus road in Acts 9—it is always for a purpose. Here, Jesus calls this woman forward so that her healing would be made public, restoring her to family and worshiping community. He receives her trembling worship as she falls before Him, the posture due a King. He draws out her testimony so that Jairus, standing right beside Him on the way to a dying daughter (see Mark 5:21-23, 35-43), would be encouraged to keep believing.

Notice the tender word Jesus speaks: "Daughter." It is family language, intimate language, the language of a child of God. Then He says, "Your faith has made you well"—the Greek sozo, the word for salvation. Jesus has moved beyond the body to the soul. She is not only healed of her affliction but saved through faith in the Messiah who would soon endure the scourging and the cross. The very "disease" the text describes uses a word meaning whip or scourge—the very thing Christ Himself would bear so that, by His blood, we would be cleansed and raised with Him.

The same Lord still calls His people out of the crowd. He sees your face, knows your story, and keeps bestowing grace—calling you "son" or "daughter," sending you in peace, and turning your testimony into encouragement for someone else who is hurting. Worship Him freely; tell the truth of what He has done; receive again today the assurance that you belong to Him. He always has more grace to bestow.

The Gospel of Mark the 5th chapter, if you're using a Pew edition of Holy Scripture, you're 5s

going to find that on page 34 for our study today, Mark the 5th chapter. 10s

The Lord Jesus Christ was no stranger to crowds. 18s

Why in just the chapters that we have been pulling verses out of in this series thus far? 23s

We have heard about Jesus associated with crowds. 31s

In the 2nd chapter, verse 4 and verse 13, the 3rd chapter, verse 7, 9, 20 and 32, the 4th chapter, 34s

in verse 1 and 36 and the 5th chapter, verse 21. 45s

And notice with me, please. 53s

The 2nd part of verse 24. 56s

And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. 59s

Jesus was no stranger to crowds. 67s

The crowds. 76s

Different faces. 79s

And behind the face, stories, all unique, all different. 83s

And then there was this crowd. 94s

And she was in the crowd. 98s

Look with me, please, at verse 25. 105s

There was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for 12 years. 109s

She didn't board much under many physicians and had spent all that she had and she was 113s

no better but rather grew worse. 119s

12 years suffering from the hemorrhages endured much. 125s

Many physicians spent all that she had. 131s

She was no better. 135s

No better. 138s

The counsel that she would have been receiving medically was not good. 141s

She would have been told, this is how you solve your problem. 145s

You go home, you drink wine with an onion. 148s

That will do it. 152s

She would have been told, take the ashes of an ostrich egg, put it in a linen bag in the 154s

summer, and then put it in a cotton bag in the winter. 163s

That's the medical advice. 171s

She would have been receiving 12 years endured much. 173s

Spent all she had. 183s

She was no better. 186s

Verse 27. 192s

She had heard about Jesus. 194s

Now you see her plight, her plight would have peaked the interest with regard to Jesus because 200s

there are ramifications with regard to her plight. 207s

She would have been declared unclean, Leviticus 15th chapter, makes that abundantly clear. 212s

She then would have been separate. 219s

She would have had to stay apart from her family, from her friends, from the temple worship, 221s

from worship in the synagogue. 228s

She was distant, separate, alone apart. 230s

So when she hears about Jesus, that peaks her interest. 238s

And what is it that she would have heard about Jesus? 241s

Would she have heard about Jesus healing Simon Peter's mother-in-law in Mark the first chapter? 245s

Would she have heard about the many that were sick and possessed with demons and Jesus healed 252s

and cast out the demons in Mark the first chapter? 259s

Would she have heard about the healing of the leper and the healing of the paralytic in Mark the second chapter? 263s

She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak for she said, 272s

if I but touch his clothes, I will be made well. 280s

Senior mindset. 290s

Her working, her way through the crowd. 294s

She's violating everything because she should never ever have been in a crowd. 300s

If I but touch 12 years endured much, many physicians. 313s

Spent all she had. 329s

And she was no better. 334s

If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well. 339s

Verse 29, immediately, her hemorrhage stopped and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 343s

And now there's another immediately and it belongs to Jesus immediately. 353s

Aware that power had gone forth from him. 357s

Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, who touched my clothes? 360s

That's not a question of ignorance here because John the second chapter tells us that he, Jesus himself, 366s

knew what was in everyone. 374s

Jesus knows exactly who he has healed. 377s

The disciples, of course, they don't have a clue what's going on. 381s

Look at the very next verse, the verse 31, and as disciples said to him, 384s

you see the crowd pressing in on you, how can you say, who touched me? 389s

They just don't get it, right? 393s

They don't have a clue. 396s

Jesus who knows what is inside of everyone. 400s

Those exactly exactly who it is. 403s

Verse 32, he looked all around to see who had done it. 412s

And the eyes look. 422s

Why is it that Jesus calls out the woman? 430s

Why does he lock in on her? 443s

Why does he call her out from the crowd? 448s

I think of this story in the Old Testament. 455s

First Samuel, third chapter. 462s

There's the story of Eli and Samuel. 465s

Eli is a priest, he's a judge. 470s

Samuel, he's a boy who assists the priest and the judge. 472s

Samuel sleeping. 478s

Here's a voice. 479s

Samuel, Samuel, Samuel gets up. 480s

He hastens very quickly to go to Eli, the priest and the judge. 482s

He let look at him and says, I don't call you. 489s

Go to bed. 491s

Samuel goes back, goes to sleep. 493s

Here's the voice again. 495s

Samuel, Samuel does the same thing. 496s

He goes up, goes to Eli. 498s

Eli looks at him. 499s

I didn't call you. 500s

Go to bed. 500s

Third time it happens. 502s

Samuel, Samuel, he goes and then finally Eli is figured this out. 504s

He says, that must be the Lord calling. 509s

If he calls you again, then say, speak Lord for your servant. 512s

Listen. 521s

What was the purpose of the calling fourth, the calling out of Samuel? 523s

Well, scripture reveals to us that the purpose of that was so that Samuel then could 529s

communicate a word of judgment to Eli. 535s

That was the purpose. 540s

Moses, Moses, the cry in Exodus out of the burning bush. 545s

And what was the reason why God was calling out Moses? 550s

What was the purpose for that? 554s

The purpose for that was to communicate that God was going to free his people from the 556s

house and then to pray in and propel them to the promised land and that Moses was going 565s

to lead them. 570s

There was the purpose of calling out Moses. 571s

Book of Acts. 576s

Saul, Saul. 579s

Why is Saul called out? 582s

Because the Lord transforms the persecutor into the proclamer. 586s

So why here? 595s

Why here with this woman who suffered for 12 years, spent all she had, wasn't any better 598s

violating everything and working her way through the crowd so that she could touch the 604s

garments of Jesus and Jesus heals her. 610s

And then Jesus says, who touched my clothing, knowing full well, who touched his clothing, 615s

knowing full well, the one that he had healed, why does Jesus call her out of the crowd? 620s

Why? 633s

Look with me, please. 636s

At verse 33. 638s

But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling. 641s

This is holy fear again, isn't it? 651s

We studied that in Mark IV chapter. 653s

Remember when their disciples are in the boat, which is just the great storm, the water is going 658s

in the boat, they're concerned, they're fearful that they're going to be drowned, and Jesus 663s

comes the sea and the reaction of the disciples was they were terrified, terrified, why? 668s

That's holy fear. 677s

They understand who it is that they are in the presence of. 679s

It's just dawning awareness of the deity of Christ. 683s

So this is holy fear. 688s

Verse 33 again, but the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling. 691s

And fell down before him. 696s

The Jews in the day didn't bow to anybody. 703s

They didn't bow to anybody. 708s

They didn't have a king. 709s

So when she bows before him, what's being communicated? 713s

That Jesus is the king, the king of kings. 722s

But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before 731s

him and told him the whole truth. 736s

He said to her daughter, your faith has made you well, go in peace and be healed of your 741s

disease. 748s

Why did Jesus call the woman out of the crowd? 754s

One main reason, because he has more grace to bestow. 762s

And remember, what is her situation? 778s

She has been separate in the society for 12 years. 780s

People know this woman and they know that she's unclean. 785s

And she has separated herself for 12 years when Jesus makes her healing public. 789s

What does that contribute to? 798s

It contributes to her being accepted back, accepted back by the family, by the society, 800s

accepted back in the temple worship, accepted back in the synagogue worship. 809s

Jesus calls her out because he has more grace to bestow. 815s

Jesus calls her out and by his grace engenders the fall on her knees in worship. 825s

And by his grace you see. 840s

Her falling before Jesus becomes a public witness to the king, to the deity of Christ. 845s

He calls her out because he has more grace to bestow. 858s

He's going to use her as a witness to others. 865s

He calls her out because the scripture says that she told him the whole story. 872s

The whole truth. 880s

So that means publicly she is standing there and she is saying the whole truth. 882s

It was 12 years. 889s

The bleeding wouldn't stop. 891s

I spent all I had. 894s

I got worse. 897s

I heard about you, Jesus. 900s

And I said if I just but to touch you and everybody's listening to that. 902s

You see by his grace Jesus calls forth the witness of the woman. 908s

And it is a public witness and who is hearing all of this, who is standing right next to Jesus. 914s

But it's Gyrus. 921s

His remember this story comes in between the story with regard to Gyrus and his daughter. 926s

And Gyrus has come to Jesus and said, my daughter lays ill and is at the point of death. 934s

And Jesus and Gyrus then start to head to the girl. 940s

And then this scenario comes up. 948s

Gyrus is right next to Jesus. 952s

Can you imagine how encouraged Gyrus was when he hears the story of this woman? 953s

When he hears what has happened of the healing, 962s

can you imagine how his spirits were lifted? 965s

As the woman is relating, the whole truth. 970s

And Gyrus now thinks of Jesus going to his daughter. 975s

And that Jesus can heal his daughter like he healed this woman. 982s

He calls her out because there's more grace to bestow. 989s

Transforming the woman into the witness and the grace of God, 997s

where the witness then is used to encourage Gyrus and others that can hear it all. 1002s

He calls her out because he has more grace to bestow. 1012s

Because what does he call her? 1018s

He says, my daughter. 1020s

My daughter. 1025s

That's family language, isn't it? 1029s

That's intimate language, isn't it? 1032s

That's child of God, language, isn't it? 1037s

And the grace that has bestowed is the assurance of who she is, 1043s

a child of God. 1049s

And she turns to her because he has more grace to bestow. 1050s

And he says, go and peace. 1059s

Your faith has made you well. 1063s

Well, there in the Greek is the word sozo. 1067s

And usually when sozo pops up as it is here, 1070s

it's an association with salvation. 1073s

He's not talking about the disease anymore now. 1076s

He's talking about her faith in the Messiah, 1079s

the very one that would go to the cross and be raised. 1084s

He turns to her, calls her my daughter because she is a daughter 1087s

through faith, a gift of God, and then says, 1094s

in your faith has made you well. 1100s

Now it's a whole different realm. 1106s

Now it's just not the healing here of what she had been suffered 1108s

12 years. 1112s

Now we're talking about eternity here. 1113s

He turns to her and says, daughter, 1119s

your faith has saved you at faith given by God. 1123s

Go and peace and be healed of your disease. 1129s

He calls her out because there is more grace to bestow. 1138s

Look again at verse 34, please. 1155s

daughter, your faith has saved you. 1159s

Go and peace and be healed of your disease. 1166s

That word there literally translated is whip or scourge. 1173s

That's the image of what she has been suffering with. 1180s

12 years, this scourging, this whipping of what she was suffering. 1184s

The Lord Jesus Christ endured the scourging with the whip, 1197s

before He went to the cross. 1207s

And remember, in ancient day, people usually didn't survive the scourging 1211s

even to get to the point of the cross. 1217s

Jesus endured the scourging and on the cross, he cleanses us. 1221s

He takes all of our sin upon Him. 1231s

He takes all of the fill of our disease of sin upon Him. 1237s

He bears it. 1247s

And through His blood we are cleansed. 1250s

He's raised out of the tomb the validation that the sacrifice has been accepted. 1253s

We're cleansed through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. 1259s

That incredible grace that God bestows, not giving us what we deserve. 1266s

And He keeps calling us out each and every day. 1274s

He keeps calling us out because He has more grace to bestow. 1278s

So He calls us out and we fall before Him in worship. 1287s

And that worship is that very act of grace expressed in our lives as we worship Him. 1295s

And that worship becomes a witness to others. 1305s

He calls us out and His grace is bestowed because He has given each one of us a story. 1310s

And He brings forth from our lips the story so that we will tell the story by His grace. 1319s

So that by His grace those who hear the story will be blessed. 1326s

So that when the person who's hurting hears the story, they're encouraged. 1332s

And by the grace of God they are changed. 1337s

And His grace is poured out upon us. 1341s

He calls us out because He has more grace to bestow. 1344s

He calls us out each and every day and says to us, 1349s

My daughter, my son, he calls us that family language, that intimate language, 1355s

that language of love. 1373s

And the grace is bestowed upon us as we continue to hear how He regards us as His own child. 1376s

He keeps calling us out because He has more grace to bestow. 1390s

And He turns to us and He says, go and peace. 1397s

Because as children of God He has brought us into that relationship, 1407s

He has claimed us as His own in the waters of baptism. 1411s

He has given us the faith, the grasp, the victory of what He's accomplished through the cross and the empty tomb. 1416s

And He keeps assuring us we are in peace relationship. 1424s

You are saved. He keeps calling us out because He's got more and more grace to bestow. 1432s

He sees us in the crowd. 1453s

He sees your face. 1458s

He knows your story. 1464s

And He calls you out because there's more grace for you. 1470s

And He calls you out because there's more grace for you. 1493s
