Overview

The Beautiful Feet: Blessing Others Through Our Witness

One of the ways God calls us to bless others is by stepping outside our comfort zones to bear witness to Him. That word—witness—often makes us freeze. We worry we lack courage, that we'll say the wrong thing, that we aren't well-studied enough to speak competently about Jesus. Before giving in to those fears, it's worth setting them aside long enough to hear what God's Word actually says about the messenger's task.

In Isaiah 52:7, the prophet paints a vivid picture for a people facing the long darkness of Babylonian captivity: "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion your God reigns." The point isn't really about feet at all. Isaiah portrays a runner bounding swiftly over rough terrain—like an antelope leaping with joy—because the news he carries is so glorious. Captivity is ending. Peace is coming. Salvation is at hand. Yahweh reigns.

Paul picks up this very image in Romans 10:13–15 and applies it to us. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved—but how can they call on One they have not believed? How can they believe in One they have not heard? How can they hear without a messenger? When the Holy Spirit called you to faith, He also called you to be a messenger. This is the same charge Jesus gave in Matthew 28:19 and Acts 1:8: make disciples of all nations; be My witnesses to the ends of the earth. The good news we carry is even fuller than Isaiah's—it is the peace of Christ Himself, in whom "all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell" and through whom God reconciles all things "by making peace through the blood of his cross" Colossians 1:19–22. It is the proclamation of liberty for those bound in sin, the assurance that Christ presents us holy and blameless before the Father, and the bold claim of John 16:33—"Take courage. I have conquered the world."

So look at your feet. Are they beautiful? Yes—because beauty here has nothing to do with the messenger and everything to do with the message. There is no need to tremble, because God Himself has called you, equipped you, and given you the witness to share. The blessing you bring others doesn't depend on your eloquence, your training, or your courage; it rests entirely in the gospel itself. When we turn our focus from ourselves to the One who sends us, we may even find a spring in our step—leaping like Isaiah's messenger over the mountains—because the news we carry is the best news ever spoken: peace, salvation, and the reign of our God in Jesus Christ.

we're going to put that principle to practice. 557s

And so I commend that class to you. 561s

We continue now with the reading of God's Holy Word. 660s

From Isaiah, the 52nd chapter, 670s

how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger 675s

who announces peace, who brings good news, 680s

who announces salvation, who says to Zion your God reigns. 685s

Let us read now Psalm 22, responsibly. 693s

To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down. 703s

Before him, shall bow all who go down to the dust, 709s

and I shall live for him. 713s

Posterity will serve him. 716s

Future generations will be told about the Lord, 719s

and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, 723s

saying that he has done it. 728s

The Holy Gospel, according to Saint Mark, the 10th chapter. 734s

They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, 739s

and Jesus was walking ahead of them. 742s

They were amazed in those who followed were afraid. 745s

He took the 12th side again and began to tell them 748s

what was to happen to him, saying, 751s

see, we are going up to Jerusalem, 754s

and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests 757s

and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death. 760s

Then they will hand him over to the Gentiles. 763s

They will mock him and spit upon him and flog him and kill him. 766s

And after three days, he will rise again. 771s

James and John, the sons of Zebadi, came forward to him 775s

and said to him, teacher, we want you to do for us 779s

whatever we ask of you. 783s

And he said to them, what is it you want me to do for you? 785s

And they said to him, grant us to sit, 789s

one at your right hand and one at your left in your glory. 793s

But Jesus said to them, you do not know what you are asking. 797s

Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, 802s

or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? 806s

They replied, we are able. 810s

Then Jesus said to them, the cup that I drink, you will drink. 814s

And with the baptism with which I am baptized, 819s

you will be baptized. 822s

But to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant. 825s

But it is for those for whom it has been prepared. 829s

When the 10 heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 833s

So Jesus called them and said to them, 838s

you know that among the Gentiles, those whom they recognize 840s

as their rulers lured it over them. 843s

And their great ones are tyrants over them. 846s

But it is not so among you. 849s

But whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 852s

and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 856s

For the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, 862s

and to give his life a ransom for many. 867s

The gospel of the Christ. 872s

There's a cloth of being out of priceless and in every nation. 888s

A cloth of all whose virile agents to the cross of Christ 897s

are called to true humility to live her life as responsibility 905s

to deep in our devotion to the cross of the Him Christ. 912s

Let us then be sober, we'll be only in the spirit, 921s

as aliens and strangers in a host of our land. 928s

Our message will be approaching. 936s

His repentance and forgiveness, 940s

the oath of salvation to the dying race of man. 944s

To love the Lord our God is the heart to be dove our mission. 951s

The spring from which our service will be lost. 958s

On cross the street or around the world, 962s

the mission still was aimed. 968s

Our claim and live the truth in Jesus name. 972s

As a candle is consumed by the passion of the flame. 978s

Sphere the light and sparingly through all the dark and blue. 986s

Let us burn to know Him deeper than a service-flaming bright. 995s

Will radiate His passion and blaze before the heart. 1002s

To love the Lord our God is the heart to be dove our mission. 1009s

The spring from which our service will be lost. 1016s

On cross the street or around the world, 1022s

the mission still was aimed. 1026s

Our claim and live the truth in Jesus name. 1029s

If you would please open your Bibles to the prophet Isaiah, 1036s

the 50-second chapter, that's the prophet Isaiah, 1041s

the 50-second chapter. 1044s

This entire sermon series on blessing others has been such an incredible blessing to us as a congregation 1048s

at living word. 1057s

It's not coincidental that when we turn our attention away from ourselves, 1058s

we start to focus on God and where He calls us and how He calls us to bless others, 1066s

then we in turn are so richly blessed and it has been such a joy to go through this series 1073s

with you, whether I am hearing the word preached or preaching it to you myself. 1083s

It has been such a blessing for us to talk and learn and dive into how we, 1089s

as brothers and sisters in faith and how we, as witnesses of God's goodness and glory, can bless others. 1097s

So today, we're going to build a little bit on what Pastor I will talk about last week. 1108s

If you recall, he talked about how there are times where God called us to push the boundaries of our 1115s

comfort zones and there are a variety of ways that He may do that. 1125s

What we're going to talk about today is how God calls us to push those boundaries or step 1130s

outside our comfort zones by calling us to be a blessing to others in our witness or by being 1139s

a witness. I know, witness, you hear that word and it's just scary. Some of us freeze up at the 1149s

end and we say, well, well, well, well, well, no, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop. You want me to talk about 1157s

Jesus, you want me to share the faith that has been given to me with other people and we come up with 1163s

so many excuses and so many reasons why that's an absurd idea. I mean, first of all, we would have to 1177s

courage. We would have to have enough courage to be able to share what we believe and share 1183s

God's word with another person and we certainly wouldn't want to say the wrong thing. Our tongues 1190s

become so tied when we think of sharing about Jesus Christ or sharing Jesus Christ with someone 1196s

or maybe we don't feel like we're well enough studied. We really need to do so much more study 1202s

in order to be able to bring a competent proclamation of Jesus Christ to others. It's just scary. 1209s

But we're going to put that fear on hold for a moment here and we're going to put our witness 1222s

on hold for just a moment and we're first going to turn to God's word and see what he has to say 1228s

about it. This is where we will open up to Isaiah. I want to give you a little bit of backstory. 1238s

As you know, the prophet Isaiah, he is prophesying. He's looking forward into Israel's time 1245s

in Babylonian captivity. He has told the Israelites that Jerusalem will be desolate. It will be 1254s

left in ruins. Now the Jewish people that he is giving this prophecy to, they didn't experience 1263s

captivity in Egypt but they knew about the captivity in Egypt. They knew what their people, 1272s

what their ancestors, what their lineage had experienced under the oppression of being captive in 1281s

Egypt. He's telling them that this captivity or another captivity will be coming to them and it 1288s

will not be good and it will be long and it will be weary and they will be a people in pain and they 1296s

will be near hopelessness if not hopeless. Then Isaiah follows that up with another prophecy. He 1304s

says to Isaiah, how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, 1323s

who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion your God reigns. Isaiah uses poetry 1332s

and imagery to create this scene of good news being delivered. How beautiful upon the mountains 1343s

are the feet of the messenger. And here we have another sticking point. We hear this beautiful 1351s

feet thing and we get kind of stopped right there. Beautiful feet. When we think of feet, we immediately 1360s

think, oh, gross. I don't want to think of feet or people's feet and we even think about in that 1366s

era a messenger's feet especially would be dusty and gross and grimy. How could they be called 1374s

beautiful and we start to try to look for the deepest meaning we can find about these feet. 1382s

But Isaiah is not prophesying about feet. It's not about the feet as feet per se. Isaiah describes 1390s

the messenger who is coming over the mountains and he's delighting in the news that he brings. 1404s

He's like an antelope who gracefully and gleefully comes over those mountains leaping with joy, 1412s

due to the message that he is going to deliver. He will announce peace. He brings good news. 1421s

He announces salvation and says to the people, they're God Yahweh reigns. 1431s

This messenger surely would be running in haste to announce that the Jews would be returning to their own land. 1439s

This long captivity would be coming to an end and peace will be with the Jewish people again. 1448s

The nation will be restored. These Jewish people will be set free and saved from their oppressors. 1455s

Salvation would come to them. In fact, Isaiah continues to write about the Savior, 1465s

to write about the Messiah, the one to bring them salvation and the messenger has a great 1473s

proclamation and affirmation that Yahweh reigns and it is beautiful. Isaiah prophesies of the 1481s

heat making haste to deliver this very good news. In the messenger would be crossing rough terrain, 1492s

would be crossing mountains and he wouldn't be slowing down. He would be running swiftly 1503s

because he held such glorious news and had to get it to the people. How beautiful upon the mountains 1508s

are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, 1518s

who says to Zion your God reigns. What good news for the Israelites? What a word of hope for their 1526s

future, a future which surely will hold difficulties and demise, but they know it's followed up 1540s

with a promise of hope and salvation. So nice for Israel. They could rest easy thanks to the word 1549s

from this prophet, but it doesn't end there, doesn't. Remember, we put something on hold. 1562s

A few moments ago, we put on hold how this pertains to us, how we are called to bless others, 1574s

how we are called to bless others with our witness. If you would please turn to Romans chapter 10, 1582s

in verse 13, everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. This is good news. What 1592s

a joy to hear that all who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved? But Paul, to the church in 1606s

home, didn't end with that one declaration. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved, 1618s

but how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one 1627s

of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? 1636s

And how are they to proclaim him? Unless they are sent. As it is written, how beautiful are the feet 1645s

of those who bring good news. How beautiful are the feet? Paul, in this letter, under the inspiration 1655s

of the Holy Spirit is referencing Isaiah 52. 7, how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of 1668s

the messenger. Look at your feet. Seriously, look at your feet. Are they beautiful? Are your feet 1677s

beautiful? Because when you were called into faith by the Holy Spirit, you were also called 1689s

to be a messenger of the good news. In Matthew 28, Jesus said to his disciples, 1696s

make disciples of all nations. In Acts 1, chapter 8, He said to his disciples, 1704s

you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. 1712s

He gave the directive. He gave the command to be a messenger to bring good news. 1720s

And this is where it gets a little scary for us. When I was directing some children's plays, 1732s

way back when, I would have the children gather up into a circle. And I would say, 1743s

think about your character. Think about what is the motivating factor? Why do they want to do what 1749s

they do or say what they say? And I have the kids think about it for just a moment. And then I'd say, 1758s

okay, now we're going to walk around the stage, but I want you to walk like your character. And so 1765s

some people might squat down and they lead with their knees or maybe someone's very determined 1774s

thinking and they lead with their forehead. And there are all sorts of different kinds of 1780s

walks that these kids would have and all these different motivating factors that would come into 1786s

play of why they would do or walk or say what they said did or how they walked. Now think about 1792s

yourself. You are not a character in a play, but you have something that is motivating you as 1803s

a messenger. You have not only good news, but you have the good news, the best news ever. 1812s

You bear the good news of the gospel. Is it crazy to think or to say that your feet are beautiful? 1822s

Is it crazy to think that as you are getting to deliver as you are the messenger of the good 1835s

news of Jesus Christ that maybe like the messenger in Isaiah 52 maybe you in your witness have a 1845s

spring in your step. Maybe you are leaping with Glee because of the news that you get to bring 1854s

the messenger in Isaiah. He brought a word first of peace. You bring that same word, but it's the 1864s

word of the fullness of peace in Christ. You are blessing others by delivering God's word of peace 1875s

to them if you would turn to collageons. The first chapter. In verse 19 we read for in him, 1886s

all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. That is in Jesus Christ. All the fullness of God was 1895s

pleased to dwell. And through him, God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth 1901s

or in heaven by making peace through the blood of his cross. Jesus Christ offers a peace that is 1908s

unlike any other peace certainly unlike any peace that the world has to offer. He says so in the gospel 1919s

of John, he reconciles us to the Father. He brings us into reconciliation with himself 1926s

with one another, with all of creation and he brings us the wholeness of the peace and the wholeness 1937s

of who we are in him, which we cannot find in this world. The messenger brings that word of peace, 1947s

but the messenger also brings good news and announces salvation, the gospel, that we bring the good 1958s

news that we bring is the proclamation of liberty to all who are bound in sin. In the gospel, 1966s

all that are broken under the weight of their sin are broken free. Our no longer held captive, 1977s

our no longer held captive to those sins that are against the perfect law of God. In the gospel, 1986s

that witness that we bring, that we deliver, it is the good news that those sins are no longer 1994s

held against us. And the gospel is not proclaimed to our own glory. The gospel does not lift us up 2004s

but it's proclaimed to the glory of God because he alone is the one who can bear the sins of the 2016s

whole world. And it's he alone who can free us from the darkness of sin. If you look at collagens 2025s

the first chapter again in verse 21, it says you who were once estranged and hostile in mind 2033s

doing evil deeds, he that is Jesus has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death. 2041s

So as to present you, holy and blameless and irreprochable before him. Is there any more freeing, 2051s

gracious or glorious news that we could bring as God's messengers as his deliverers of good news, 2063s

we bring the sure promise and the sure proclamation that God indeed reigns in John 16. 2076s

Jesus says take courage. I have conquered the world. In our sinful nature, 2089s

we're hostile in mind as Paul wrote in collagens, we're doing evil deeds. In our sinful nature, 2101s

we try to make any excuse we can to remain in that bondage to sin. And then we have the 2111s

beautiful beat of a messenger who comes to us, speaking those beautiful pure words of gospel, 2123s

grace and truth that Jesus has conquered the darkness of this world. That Jesus has conquered 2133s

the sin of this world and that includes the sin that we contribute to creation, the sin that we 2143s

contribute to this world. He's conquered it. He's conquered it and he has presented you or will present 2154s

you holy and blameless before the Father. Your messenger, you are a witness, a messenger, a bearer, 2164s

of good news and you can claim that you have beautiful feet because it's not about your feet. 2177s

You can claim a bold witness and to be a bold witness because it's not about you. 2188s

We're turning our attention, our focus away from ourselves. We are the messengers. You bless 2201s

others with your witness because you are witnessing to them of the saving grace of our Lord, 2211s

Jesus Christ. So there's no need to tremble. There's no need to fear 2219s

because it is God who has called you to be his messenger. It is God who has called you and 2227s

given you a witness of himself and we can give thanks because we have been called to be his messengers 2234s

and we can give thanks and glory to God because the blessing that we have to give others is not 2246s

our own and the blessing that we share is not dependent upon us as the messenger 2254s

but the blessing rests in the message itself. So look at your feet again. Give them a real good 2264s

stare. How beautiful, how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news. 2276s

Let us confess our faith in the words of the apostles' creed. 2291s

I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ 2297s

has only sun our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. 2304s

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. 2311s

On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. 2319s

He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy 2326s

Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body 2332s

and the life everlasting. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. 2339s

music 2512s

Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus. 2539s

And for all people, according to their need. 2543s

Gracious Father, help us to treasure in our hearts all that you have done for us. 2547s

May our gratitude find its expression in service of you, Lord in your mercy. 2553s

Here are prayer. 2560s

Almighty God, you are great and all-knowing. 2563s

Your discerning eye probes our hearts and measures the impact of the events of our 2567s
